It should come as no surprise that in honour of AUS Music Month, today’s selection is packed full of great tunes from all around Australia, showcasing some of the country’s best talent on offer right now (and there’s a HUGE pool to draw from).
1. “Free Your Mind” – Cut Copy
Following up on their Grammy nominated, ARIA winning 2011 album “Zonoscope”, Melbourne’s Cut Copy are set to release their fourth studio album, “Free Your Mind” TOMORROW!
The recent release of the title track also delivered us a quirky clip featuring none other than the band’s #1 Hollywood star fan, Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood).
As the story goes, Skarsgård caught Cut Copy play while he was in Rio. Loving the music, he asked to meet the band back stage and an instant friendship formed between himself and the band’s frontman, Dan Whitford.
When it came time to find someone to star in the clip for “Free Your Mind”, Alexander was contacted and he jumped at the chance. Nice!
2. “Plastic Bag in a Hurricane” – Pluto Jonze
As promised, I must straight up give 100% of the credit of discovering this talented young Sydney-sider to Kirsten. She stumbled upon his music earlier this year, and we’ve since seen him deliver energetic live performances twice now, the latest being a support spot at Eskimo Joe’s gig the other night.
He’s released a couple of great tracks of late in the popular “Eject” and this earlier offering, “Plastic Bag in a Hurricane”.
3. “Ain’t It Time” – Rainy Day Women
This boppy, sun-drenched song is delivered to us by the Perth-based five-piece band Rainy Day Women.
After enjoying success on Triple J’s digital “Unearthed” station, the boys have recently made their way onto the regular station’s playlist where they are gathering new fans every day with this new track.
4. “Let Her Go” – Jagwar Ma
For the sharp ones amongst you, you will notice that this is the third time this year that Sydney’s Jagwar Ma have made it onto #MusicMonday! It’s for good reason.
Unless something dramatic drops in the next half dozen weeks, then they’ve already secured a spot in my *spoiler* “Best of 2013” list for their album “Howlin'”. This is the latest track from that fantastic release.
5. “Werewolves” – Calling All Cars
Ok, so I’m a few days late to milk the Halloween-ness of this sweet last, loud, short track from Calling All Cars. Crank it up if you dare!
