G Adventures South America – Day 1 – Lima

G Adventures South America – Day 1 – Lima

Well it’s felt like a lifetime in coming, but today marked the first day of my South American tour of Peru and Bolivia with the awesome people at G Adventures. And, while it hasn’t exactly ended in the most ideal of ways (I’ll touch on that shortly), I met the 15 other people who will make up my traveling family over the next 30 days or so and I’m happy to report that they seem like a great bunch.

With a good sleep under my belt, it was up and at ‘em early to be down at the Paracas fishing wharf where we boarded one of a number of motor boats which ferried us out to one of the most popular of all tourist attractions in this area – the Ballestas Islands.

After a day of travel from Peru’s coastline out to the dry Nazca region, today presented all of our G Adventures crew with the opportunity to take a look into the lives of the ancient people of this land with a visit to the “Chauchilla” desert cemetery.

G Adventures South America – Day 5 – Arequipa

With a long and relatively comfortable coach journey from Nazca overnight, we arrived at the coach depot in Arequipa – some with fresher faces than others. We all piled into a private mini-bus, which felt like heaven after the public transport we just endured, and made our way to the lovely El Solar Hostel, a couple of blocks off the main plaza in town.

With a long day of road travel ahead of us as we made our way up to “Chivay” in the Peruvian highland region boasting the world’s deepest canyon – the Colca Canyon, I made sure I was up early enough to take advantage of the free breakfast available from “Hostal Solar’s” garden rooftop dining area.

First of all, let me wish all those concerned a HAPPY ST PATRICK’S DAY! Usually on this day you can find me bolted to a bar stool in an Irish pub somewhere sucking down way too many pints of Guinness, toasting (multiple times) probably one of my favourite celebrations on the annual calendar.

After a big day exploring the sites and historical attractions of the beautiful city of Cuzco all day yesterday, we kicked things off this morning with a bus ride up into the hills behind the city and into the vicinity of a significant set of ruins known as “Sacsayhuaman” (pronounced Sexay Woman).
