It's been a while in coming, but I finally made a move this weekend to make use of the Xmas present generously given to me by my girlfriend Carmen, last December. An Intermediate Digital SLR Intensive Weekend Workshop put on by the knowledgeable folk at Vancouver Photo Workshops (VPW) was what I have enrolled in, and with day one under my belt already, I have to say it's been a great choice of course so far.
You never really know with photography workshops whether you are going to get anything out of them or if you have chosen the right course for your level of knowledge. Happily, I can report that I seem to have found the perfect fit for my current abilities and will be re-energised and motivated to get out and start shooting again on a more regular basis following this weekend... I have no doubt!
Ably tutored by talented Vancouver-based photographer Syxx Langemann (left below), day one of the two-day workshop involved a comprehensive run-through of things like:
- Review of basic photography concepts (ISO, shutter speed, F-stops etc)
- Photographic process from effective camera setup to shooting and final output
- Effective white balance techniques
- XDR & HDR Techniques
- Timed exposures and panoramas.
We then broke for lunch and met again to conduct a photo walk along alleyways and streets down to the Millennium Waters development (2010 Olympic Village). I'm so used to shooting wildlife, landscape and travel subjects, that I felt a little out of sync scouting for abstract frames, but I think I managed to grab a few decent shots along the way that I'll be taking back tomorrow morning to share and have critiqued by the rest of my class.
So with day one done and dusted, it's a big thumbs up from me for the course so far. Syx seems to be an extremely capable and likable character, and time spent in the studio with models under his guidance tomorrow is something that I'm really looking forward to.
